Hertha Berlin should start with world-class defensive midfielders Matteo Guendouzi and Sami Khedira when they head to high-flying Wolfsburg on Saturday. Read our reasons for Wolfsburg vs Hertha prediction and betting tips.
The Berliners will need plenty of steel in their midfield if they’re to stop this Wolfsburg team. Striker Wout Weghorst may grab the headlines with his 14 goals, but it’s this Wolves defense that has been particularly impressive. Six straight clean sheets in the league is a new club record, with five of those underpinning wins and propelling Oliver Glasner’s side up to third in the table. They have only lost twice all season (away at Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund), demonstrating just how good their 2020/21 campaign has been.
Changes will be needed in that water-tight backline, though, with former Hertha center-back, John Brooks suspended for an accumulation of yellow cards. Marin Pongracic is the natural replacement in front of goalkeeper Koen Casteels. The only other definite absentee is playmaker Josip Brekalo due to concussion, although Maxi Arnold has been unwell this week and could cede his place to club captain Josuha Guilavogui.
Wolfsburg: Casteels (c) - Mbabu, Lacroix, Pongracic, Otavio - Schlager, Arnold - Baku, Gerhardt, Steffen - Weghorst
Out: Brekalo (concussion), Brooks (suspended)
Doubtful: -
Coach: Oliver Glasner
Khedira made his first Bundesliga start since May 2010 in Hertha’s 3-0 defeat at home to RB Leipzig last Sunday before being replaced by Guendouzi with 20 minutes remaining. Coach Pal Dardai - yet to win in his four games since taking charge for the second time - could play both alongside Lucas Tousart in a reinforced midfield, with Guendouzi the more likely to miss out if he opts to continue with his 4-2-3-1 system. The Old Lady needs a change in fortunes as they sit uncomfortably outside the relegation play-off spot on goal difference alone.
They could hand a first start to Nemanja Radonjic. The Serbia winger has been lively in his three cameo appearances so far. Dardai handed a first senior start to son Marton against Leipzig, but the center-back has competition from Omar Alderete and, once he returns to fitness, Jordan Torunarigha.
Hertha: Jarstein - Pekarik, Stark (c), M. Dardai, Mittelstädt - Khedira, Tousart - Lukebakio, Cunha, Radonjic - Piatek
Out: Boyata (foot), Dilrosun (knee), Leckie (thigh), Plattenhardt (hip), Torunarigha (groin)
Doubtful: -
Coach: Pal Dardai

Daniel Garcia is originally from Basque Country, and as a kid who grew up just a few streets from Mendizorrotza Stadium, the choice of Deportivo Alavés as his favourite club is more than obvious. Because of his studies, he moved to Madrid where he graduated in Sports Journalism. Daniel plays football on the weekends, but that does not stop him from watching all La Liga matches. He believes that the outcome of a match can be predicted if all the parameters are analyzed well, including form of the players and weather conditions. Currently he is living in Belgrade, and is in love with a Serbian girl who works as a journalist at one of the famous Sport Channels in Serbia.
