Wout Weghorst will be looking to keep his Wolfsburg side in the hunt for a UEFA Champions League return when they host relegation-battling Koln on Saturday. Read our reasons for Wolfsburg vs Koln prediction and betting tips.
Wolfsburg's record since the turn of the year has been nothing short of remarkable, the Wolves propelling themselves into third-place with eight wins from their last 10 matches. Their latest victory - the 2-1 win over Werder Bremen last time out - saw Weghorst get on the scoresheet for the 17th time this term and the big Dutchman has scored in each of his last three league matches. Weghorst scored his 50th Bundesliga goal in his 92nd outing before the international break. He is the fourth player to reach that mark for Wolfsburg after Edin Dzeko (66), Grafite (59), and Diego Klimowicz (57). Wolfsburg has already collected more points this season (51) than in the entirety of last season (49). Just three defeats and 22 goals conceded after 26 matches of a Bundesliga season are both Bundesliga records for Wolfsburg.
Yannick Gerhardt operated at left-back against Werder but should return to his spot behind Weghorst further up the field. Jerome Roussillon is ready for a first start since the Matchday 12 defeat to Bayern Munich. The Frenchman shaking off a calf injury is particularly timely with Admir Mehmedi picking up a similar injury. Yannick Gerhardt, who has deputized at left-back, should therefore return to attacking midfield, with little other reason for Oliver Glasner to change what has been a winning formula in 2021.
Wolfsburg: Casteels (c) - Mbabu, Lacroix, Brooks, Roussillon - Schlager, Arnold - Baku, Gerhardt, Brekalo - Weghorst
Out: Mehmedi (calf), Otavio (suspended), Steffen (ankle)
Doubtful: Ginczek (knee), Pongracic (calf)
Coach: Oliver Glasner
While Wolfsburg has been soaring in 2021, Koln has been in free-fall recently. Markus Gisdol's side looked to have ended their five-game wait for a win at home to Borussia Dortmund before the international break, only for Erling Haaland to snatch a 2-2 draw in the last minute. That result left Koln third-bottom and in the relegation play-off place, one point above Arminia Bielefeld in the automatic relegation spots and a point off Mainz in the safety of 15th. Cologne has now gone six games without a win. Only Schalke is enduring a worse run.
Encouragingly, Ismail Jakobs scored his first goal of the campaign against Dortmund and Gisdol could name an unchanged side for the trip to Wolfsburg, although Dominick Drexler is under internal pressure for his place in the starting line-up from both Max Meyer and Elvis Rexhbecaj who has been on loan at Koln from Wolfsburg since January 2020.
Koln: T. Horn - Ehizibue, Mere, Czichos, J. Horn - Skhiri, Hector (c) - Wolf, Rexhbecaj, Jakobs - Duda
Out: Bornauw (back), Thielmann (muscular)
Doubtful: Andersson (knee), Katterbach (ankle)
Coach: Markus Gisdol

Daniel Garcia is originally from Basque Country, and as a kid who grew up just a few streets from Mendizorrotza Stadium, the choice of Deportivo Alavés as his favourite club is more than obvious. Because of his studies, he moved to Madrid where he graduated in Sports Journalism. Daniel plays football on the weekends, but that does not stop him from watching all La Liga matches. He believes that the outcome of a match can be predicted if all the parameters are analyzed well, including form of the players and weather conditions. Currently he is living in Belgrade, and is in love with a Serbian girl who works as a journalist at one of the famous Sport Channels in Serbia.
