VfL Wolfsburg hosts a Bayer Leverkusen at the Volkswagen Arena on Sunday in a thrilling matchup of two ambitious sides for the new season.
Wolfsburg clinched their European place with a seventh position in the domestic league and earned a UEFA Europa League qualification spot. The new season started well, Wolfsburg overcame Regionaliga side Union Fürstenwalde 4-1 in the DFB Cup first round last week, with mazy Joao Victor scoring twice. Weghorst, as last season, will lead the attacking line for Oliver Glasner's side, who are short of defensive options without right-backs Kevin Mbabu and William due to injury. Weghorst was Wolfsburg's top scorer last season with 16 goals. Only Robert Lewandowski (34), Timo Werner (28), and Jadon Sancho (17) scored more league-wide. Felix Klaus, a winger, should drop into defense for the Bundesliga premiere encounter. They add some fresh faces in the defense, 20-year-old Maxence Lacroix should start alongside John Brooks as a pair of central defenders. Xaver Schlager could accompany vice-captain Maximilian Arnold in midfield, even though Yannick Gerhardt played well in that position in the DFB Cup victory. Wolfsburg was busy during the week but should be even more confident after the 0-4 Europa League qualifiers victory vs Kukësi.
It’s turned out that Max Arnold’s injury isn’t as bad as we first feared. If the pain eases up, he might be able to play on Sunday. He is a great contributor from the set-pieces and could be crucial for Wolfsburg in the new campaign. Arnold was the creator of an incredible 4-1 victory in the previous meeting between these two sides in May and will be filled to the brim with confidence going into this game because his assists that gave chance to Marin Pongracic to score a rare brace on the day but are injured at the moment and will not be available for this match. Josuha Guillavogui is serving a suspension.
Wolfsburg: Casteels (c) - Klaus, Lacroix, Brooks, Otavio - Schlager, Arnold - Steffen, Mehmedi, Brekalo - Weghorst
Out: Guilavogui (suspended), Mbabu (knee), Pongracic (glandular fever)
Doubtful: William (knee)
Coach: Oliver Glasner
Leverkusen also clinched a place in Europe the last term, they finished just two points behind Borussia Mönchengladbach and the final UEFA Champions League place so they started to look around for reinforcements. The transfer window was very busy for a side already bulked with talents, but it was reasonable to try to fill the holes that left after Kai Havertz and Kevin Volland departed. Schick has signed from Roma having spent last season on loan at RB Leipzig and he will have great support from Moussa Diaby and Florian Wirtz, who is tipped to take Havertz’s minutes and role in the squad. The 17-year-old became their youngest ever player and the Bundesliga's youngest scorer during 2019/20. Wirtz overtook Havertz as Leverkusen's youngest ever debutant and scorer last term. He made his debut two weeks past his 17th birthday and scored his first goal - against Manuel Neuer no less - at the age of 17 years, one month and four days old. With only Paulinho certain of missing out and Leon Bailey a doubt due to a lack of match fitness, Bosz has plenty of options with the likes of Exequiel Palacios and Karim Bellarabi also pushing for a place in the Leverkusen starting line-up.
Leverkusen will go into the meeting following on from a 0-7 DFB-Pokal win over Eintracht Norderstedt. Goalscorers were Lars Bender (4'), Nadiem Amiri (10', 31'), Lucas Alario (12'), Florian Wirtz (21'), Charles Aránguiz (30') and Patrik Schick (77').
Leverkusen: Hradecky - L. Bender, S. Bender, Tapsoba, Sinkgraven - Wirtz, Aranguiz (c), Demirbay - Amiri, Schick, Diaby
Out: Paulinho (knee)
Doubtful: Bailey (match fitness)
Coach: Peter Bosz

Wolfsburg should be more tired after the trip to Albania but with even more confidence. They are well aware that last season’s 4-1 victory can’t be replicated but they will try everything to copy/paste set-pieces from that game and a high percentage of chances they converted to goals. Leverkusen has one of the talented squads not only in Bundesliga but in Europe and both teams to score is a reasonable bet.

Daniel Garcia is originally from Basque Country, and as a kid who grew up just a few streets from Mendizorrotza Stadium, the choice of Deportivo Alavés as his favourite club is more than obvious. Because of his studies, he moved to Madrid where he graduated in Sports Journalism. Daniel plays football on the weekends, but that does not stop him from watching all La Liga matches. He believes that the outcome of a match can be predicted if all the parameters are analyzed well, including form of the players and weather conditions. Currently he is living in Belgrade, and is in love with a Serbian girl who works as a journalist at one of the famous Sport Channels in Serbia.
