Shkodran Mustafi has impressed since joining Schalke from Arsenal, but can he lead the Royal Blues past Wolfsburg on Saturday and ultimately out of the drop zone? Read our reasons for Wolfsburg vs Schalke prediction and betting tips.
Wolfsburg's nine-game unbeaten run and seven matches without conceding came to an end in defeat at Hoffenheim last time out but Oliver Glasner's men remain well placed in third as they pursue a return to the UEFA Champions League for the first time since their quarter-final run in 2015/16. Glasner's hand has been forced with the suspensions of Maxence Lacroix, Xaver Schlager, and Paulo Otavio for this one. Marin Pongracic is back from a ban of his won and should slot alongside John Brooks in place of Lacroix, while club captain Josuha Guilavogui is ready to replace Schlager in midfield. Otavio's late red card against Hoffenheim is perhaps the most difficult to resolve. Jerome Roussillon is injured, and while Yannick Gerhardt played at left-back earlier in his career, his form at No.10 is a lot to sacrifice. Kevin Mbabu switching flanks might be the solution. Things are more settled in the attack, where Weghorst's 15-goal return has only been bettered by Robert Lewandowski, Andre Silva, and Erling Haaland.
Wolfsburg: Casteels - Baku, Pongracic, Brooks, Mbabu - Guilavogui (c), Arnold - Mehmedi, Gerhardt, Brekalo - Weghorst
Out: Lacroix (suspended), Schlager (suspended), Steffen (ankle), Otavio (suspended)
Doubtful: Roussillon (calf)
Coach: Oliver Glasner
As for the visitors, they can only dream of the kind of top-four tilt they have been so accustomed to in the recent season. Schalke minds are solely focused on what would be the greatest of escapes this season. The Royal Blues are currently nine points adrift of the relegation play-off place, their top-flight status under serious threat with just 10 games to go. The 0-0 draw with fellow strugglers Mainz on Matchday 24 delivered an encouraging clean sheet but will feel like a missed opportunity. New coach Dimitrios Grammozis still has a long injury list to contend with, while Oscar Mascarell's absence through suspension further impacts his selection. Grammozis will look to January arrivals Mustafi and Saed Kolasinac to help lead his side into the light, while they will also be hoping that this is the weekend Matthew Hoppe ends his seven-game Bundesliga goal drought in the continued absence of Klaas-Jan Huntelaar.
Schalke: Rönnow - Becker, Mustafi, Thiaw - William, Serdar, Kolasinac (c), Calhanoglu - Harit - Hoppe, Raman
Out: Boujellab (ankle), Fährmann (rib), Huntelaar (calf), Ludewig (foot), Mascarell (suspended), Nastasic (calf), Paciencia (knee), Sane (knee), Skrzybski (knee), Uth (thigh)
Doubtful: Bentaleb (groin), Harit (muscular)
Coach: Dimitrios Grammozis

Daniel Garcia is originally from Basque Country, and as a kid who grew up just a few streets from Mendizorrotza Stadium, the choice of Deportivo Alavés as his favourite club is more than obvious. Because of his studies, he moved to Madrid where he graduated in Sports Journalism. Daniel plays football on the weekends, but that does not stop him from watching all La Liga matches. He believes that the outcome of a match can be predicted if all the parameters are analyzed well, including form of the players and weather conditions. Currently he is living in Belgrade, and is in love with a Serbian girl who works as a journalist at one of the famous Sport Channels in Serbia.
