After an impressive performance away to Bayern Munich last week, Werder Bremen faces Wolfsburg in the Matchday 9 opener on Friday.
Wolfsburg is one of just two teams, alongside Bayer Leverkusen, still unbeaten in the Bundesliga in 2020/21, currently sixth place in the standings with a 2-0 win away to Schalke last time out. If Wolfsburg wins or draws, they would equal the club-record run of nine straight Bundesliga games without defeat set under head coach Oliver Glasner last season. The Wolves have scored eight of their nine league goals this season before the half-time whistle. They have never won three consecutive league matches with him at the bench.
Wout Weghorst continued his fine run of form by scoring for the fourth time in his last five league games, but Wolfsburg is heavily depending on their defense – best in the league with just five goals conceded. With four goals and an assist, Weghorst has been directly involved in 55 percent of scored goals. Josip Brekalo and Renato Steffen were lively in the wide attacking positions behind Weghorst, which means summer arrival Maximilian Philipp is likely to have to settle for a place on the bench again. The team's injury worries have eased somewhat with Kevin Mbabu available once more, but Ridle Baku's strong displays at right-back could leave the Switzerland international among the substitutes again here.
Wolfsburg: Casteels (c) - Baku, Lacroix, Brooks, Roussillon - Schlager, Arnold - Steffen, Mehmedi, Brekalo - Weghorst
Out: -
Doubtful: Ginczek (back), Pongracic (not included)
Coach: Oliver Glasner
Werder Bremen will be full of confidence coming into this fixture after a disciplined performance earned them a 1-1 draw at Bayern on Matchday 8 in a game they could conceivably have won. Bremen are unbeaten in their last seven games and have drawn each of their last five 1-1. Sargent led the line superbly, outfoxing Javi Martinez to set up Maximilian Eggestein for the opener, and he was twice denied by world-class Manuel Neuer saves. Milot Rashica should join him once again in attack, the Kosovo international gradually working his way back to his impish best after an early-season injury. Rashica has two goals in two games against Wolfsburg but is yet to get off the mark this season.
Manchester United loanee Tahith Chong will, in all likelihood, have to make do with a place on the substitutes' bench, where four-goal top scorer Niclas Füllkrug could also find himself following a four-match absence through injury. The Bayern result keeps Florian Kohfeldt's side in ninth place following five straight draws, while they have not lost since a 4-1 home reverse to Hertha Berlin on an opening day.
Bremen: Pavlenka - Groß, Toprak, Friedl - Gebre Selassie (c), Eggestein, Mbom, Augustinsson - Bittencourt, Rashica - Sargent
Out: -
Doubtful: Füllkrug (calf), Veljkovic (groin)
Coach: Florian Kohfeldt

Both teams had some impressive defensive performances and with both teams trying to stay undefeated as much as possible it could be under 2.5 goals once again.

Daniel Garcia is originally from Basque Country, and as a kid who grew up just a few streets from Mendizorrotza Stadium, the choice of Deportivo Alavés as his favourite club is more than obvious. Because of his studies, he moved to Madrid where he graduated in Sports Journalism. Daniel plays football on the weekends, but that does not stop him from watching all La Liga matches. He believes that the outcome of a match can be predicted if all the parameters are analyzed well, including form of the players and weather conditions. Currently he is living in Belgrade, and is in love with a Serbian girl who works as a journalist at one of the famous Sport Channels in Serbia.
