Young Boys hosts Bayer Leverkusen in the first leg of their Europa League last-32 knockout-stage on Thursday evening.
Young Boys will be hoping to translate their stellar domestic form into the continental competition. The hosts have been flying high in the final third lately and will come into this in the highest of spirits. Gerardo Seoane’s men are as many as 16 points clear atop the Swiss Super League standings after 20 rounds. They have been fantastic after the winter break, winning six and drawing one of seven league outings this year. Young Boys have won each of their last 5 league games, scoring 14 in the process and while they are underdogs, should be expected to make life difficult for Leverkusen. After all, they scored three or more goals in three of the last four Super League matches.
Young Boys will look to pounce on visitor's vulnerability as the in-form Swiss Super League champions go into the European knockout rounds for the first time since 2015. Finishing behind Roma in the group, the Bern outfit aims to go beyond the last 32 for the first time since 1988 in the UEFA Cup, when they reached the quarter-finals. Young Boys' top goalscorer Jean-Pierre Nsame, who notched four goals in the group stages, and Mohamed Camara are suspended after their dismissals in the group stage. Christopher Martins Pereira, Vincent Sierro, and Esteban Petignat could all miss out through injury.
Young Boys: Von Ballmoos; Hefti, Lustenberger, Zesiger, Lefort; Fassnacht, Lauper, Aebischer, Ngamaleu; Mambimbi, Elia
The story is opposite to the visitors. Die Werkself has been struggling badly to keep things tight at the back lately. The lack of defensive meticulousness is the main reason for Bayer’s slump in form. The team led by Peter Bosz did not keep a single clean sheet in the last eleven matches in all competitions. They will travel to Switzerland off the back of a disappointing 2-2 draw with relegation strugglers Mainz last weekend at BayArena. Leverkusen has won only three times and lost on seven occasions in the last 11 games in all competitions. This included a stunning 2-1 defeat to fourth-tier side, Rot-Weiss Essen, in the DFB Pokal. Bayer enjoyed a superb run in the group phase, winning five of six matches against Slavia Prague, Hapoel Beer Sheva, and Nice. The Germans will be looking for a fifth consecutive European victory for the first time since 1994.
Leverkusen is likely to travel to Bern without Karim Bellarabi, Mitchell Weiser, Lars Bender, Julian Baumgartlinger, Santiago Arias, and Paulinho due to injury. Bosz must choose whether to select Lucas Alario or Patrik Schick to lead the attack, with Leon Bailey and Moussa Diaby likely to flank whichever striker is preferred.
Bayer Leverkusen: Hradecky; Fosu-Mensah, Tah, Tapsoba, Sinkgraven; Demirbay, Aranguiz, Wirtz; Bailey, Alario, Diaby

Both teams have their problems, a team from Bern must feel the loss of their top goalscorer Nsame, and on the other side, the visitors may lack consistency and self-confidence. Both teams to score is the most preferable betting option.

Daniel Garcia is originally from Basque Country, and as a kid who grew up just a few streets from Mendizorrotza Stadium, the choice of Deportivo Alavés as his favourite club is more than obvious. Because of his studies, he moved to Madrid where he graduated in Sports Journalism. Daniel plays football on the weekends, but that does not stop him from watching all La Liga matches. He believes that the outcome of a match can be predicted if all the parameters are analyzed well, including form of the players and weather conditions. Currently he is living in Belgrade, and is in love with a Serbian girl who works as a journalist at one of the famous Sport Channels in Serbia.
